Online Marketing With Twitter

19 Jan 2011

Twitter MarketingTwitter, the microblogging website where you can post messages of up to 140 characters each, has grown to become one of the largest social media sites in the world. With over 190 million users and 65 million posts a day, there is a huge potential for promoting your website and generating traffic to it.

Traffic Benefits of Twitter

Everytime you post something on your blog or update your website, why not post it on Twitter as well? Those that follow you on Twitter will be instantly informed of the update and if interested, they will click through and look at your website.  Many users are finding that by instantly Tweeting a headline and link to your latest blog post or website update attracts more visitors faster than a lot of other methods, especially if you have a large base of followers.  Also, if your content is good enough, your followers may share it with their followers by “retweeting” it on their own Twitter feed.

Twitter is also a great way to create marketing buzz by offering special discounts, announce competitions or events, or publish discount codes to your followers.

Link Building Benefits of Twitter

Links on Twitter are nofollow, meaning theoretically they don’t enhance your rankings on Google. Despite this, since the implementation of Google Caffeine, their algorithm incorporates Twitter and Facebook. This means that the more your links are shared on Twitter and the more followers you have, the more likely your Twitter posts will appear in the social media links in Google’s “real time” results. Google has also confirmed that articles that have been shared a lot on Twitter carry some weight for regular and news search results as well. Bing also looks at “social authority”, particularly Twitter and Facebook in their social search and to some extent their regular search results.

The SEO value of Twitter is not derived specifically from the links built the lead back to your own website. The value is in getting traffic, which in turn reflects on the popularity of your website and Alexa rating, which Google also takes into account when ranking your website in search results. To help your website visitors share your content on their own Twitter account, you can add a “Retweet” button to your content pages very easily.

Build Customer Relationships

Twitter is also a great marketing tool because it is a platform where you can find conversations that relate to your company in some way. By joining these conversations, you can get valuable (and even direct) feedback about your brand or a customer’s experience. Customers can also find it easier to interact with staff, making less hassle for them to deal with you and more immediate than say, over the phone. To find current and useful conversations on Twitter, you can use the search box, simple... You can also directly market to people who are posting about problems that they are experiencing. For example, if you sell a product that solves a specific problem, you could search for conversations that discuss that problem and then join that conversation.

Twitter Etiquette

When using Twitter, it is important not to make yourself too unwelcome. Here are a few ways that you can keep your tweeting from upsetting too many people:

1. Create a complete bio and have a picture (of yourself or company logo, suit yourself.) People want to know who you are.

2. Be transparent about the business you represent or your employer. People don’t like feeling deceived, even if the deception wasn’t intentional.

3. Without being face to face with people you have a conversation with, you can’t tell how your message is being received. Be careful with the language you use and think about how your tweets are perceived by others.

4. It’s better to direct message someone if you’re making 1:1 plans or having a very focused, personal conversation.

5. It’s Ok to have multiple twitter identities

6. It’s OK to disregard robots.

7. Don’t get hung up on the numbers, that’s not what matters. Its a case of who you know not how many you know.

8. Promoting and talking with others is a great way to show your participation to the community.
