Manually submitting your website to that many search engines is certainly time consuming, and with search engine market share basically being divided up between only a few big players, it would seem to be a big waste of time. Many website owners, however, wouldn’t want to miss out on being included in every search engine on the planet, no matter how small the pool of users may be. So an automated system of search engine submission using software or an outsourced or web based service must be the answer!
Unless the service is free, I wouldn’t bother... there are free web based services out there, but that’s not a reason to recommend an automated search engine submission, or a manual one for that matter. While even the major search engines have manual website submission forms to inform them of your website’s existence, this is not a fast or effective way to get indexed. Your website will probably sit in a queue for an indeterminate amount of time before being crawled by the search engine and then may not get a good rank. Google for example will favour websites that it finds through links to it on other websites. The logic here is that if other websites are linking to yours and are related to your topic, then your website is more worthy of placing higher in the index.
Google and other search engines “crawl” large and established directories to pick up and index new websites. Directories are favoured that are known to have human editors that review each website before approving them to be listed in the directory.
PR sites are a great way to announce your new website as well as get some valuable links back to your website
Most of the search engines that matter have a facility to submit an XML site map to them directly. This is different from their normal website submission form. You will need a login account and the page is usually listed under “web master tools”.
If you still want to have your site submitted to the hundreds of other search engines, you can use an automated service/software or do it yourself manually. It probably won’t hurt you much, but it’s not the best use of your time. Watch out for the free services too; nothing is really for free, and I’d be nervous about giving up your email address to them as you may be opening the flood gates to spam.
